Bomb blast kills three in Sri Lanka

Oct 10, 2006 (AFP) - A powerful bomb ripped through a passenger van in Sri Lanka's embattled northern district of Vavuniya on Tuesday, killing the driver and two others, police said. The driver had stopped at his home when a device placed inside the vehicle exploded, police said, adding that two people in the victim's house were also killed.

The van had been in police custody before being released Tuesday to the owner pending an inquiry into a road accident last month, a police official in Vavuniya, 260 kilometres (160 miles) north of Colombo, said by telephone.

He said an investigation was underway.

No further information was available.

The explosion occurred amid an upsurge in ethnic violence in the island since December that has claimed over 1,500 lives.
