Waves that battered stretches of Sri Lanka’s coastline also washed away several coastal villages where migrant returnees, migrant dependants and prospective migrants lived.

Many lost a lifetime of savings and collected assets, with one fifth of a population of about five million in tsunami hit districts, dependant on housemaid labour abroad.
