Jan 16, 2007 (LBO) — A roadside bomb in southeastern Sri Lanka that targeted a passenger bus had killed 23 and injured 67, the defence ministry said Wednesday, as a ceasefire with the Tamil Tigers officially drew to a close. The bus was traveling from the town of Buttala to Okkampitiya, an area bordering the Eastern province of Sri Lanka.
The explosion went off around 7.40 am local time.
The defence ministry said school children were also traveling in the bus.
Tamil Tigers are still present in some parts of eastern Sri Lanka, though populated areas are now under government control.
A ceasefire with the Tamil Tigers struck in 2002 officially ends today after the Sri Lanka gave notice of the pull out two weeks ago. .
