“Cabinet has approved, on principle, that hotels damaged by the tsunami can import reconstruction items duty free,” said P Ramanujam, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism.

“They can start importing immediately. Some of the big hotels have already placed foreign orders,” said Ramanujam.

The Tourist Board is now working with the Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka to verify applications for duty free imports.

Importers must present a declaration to Customs, certified by the Hotels Association and the Ministry of Tourism, for import duty waivers.

Tourism organizations that lost vehicles to the tsunami can also apply for import duty waivers.
