Central Bank denies banks stopped from accepting Qatari Riyals

June 06, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Central Bank on Tuesday categorically denied that the Central Bank has informed banks not to accept Qatari Riyals. Releasing a press release, the Central Bank stated that various media institutions had published reports stating that the Central Bank has informed banks not to accept Qatari Riyals.

There were also reports that commercial banks in Sri Lanka even stopped accepting Qatar Riyal after recent diplomatic tensions erupted in the Gulf nation. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates detached ties to Qatar on Monday accusing it of supporting regional terror groups.

The move came weeks after President Trump visited Saudi Arabia and vowed to improve ties with both Riyadh and Cairo to combat regional terror groups.
