The Italian government donates heavy machinery for road construction in tsunami damaged Sri Lanka. “Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation has received Rs 380 million worth of heavy machinery from the Italian Civil Protection Department of the office of the President of the Council of Ministers of Italy,” said a statement from the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation (RRR).

The Ministry of RRR and the Italian Civil Protection Department will monitor the implementation of a joint action plan in using the equipment in road rehabilitation.

Around 1,615 km of roadway, including 1,137 km of National Roads, was damaged by the tsunami.

According to the government’s central tsunami reconstruction body, TAFREN, donors have already pledged up to US$ 353.

6 million worth of assistance to rehabilitate roads and bridged along the southern, eastern and northern coastal belt that were damaged by the tsunami.

The pledges are made up of US$ 172.25 million in loans
