The JVP wants all tsunami-affected businesses released from their current and previous tax obligations. The government’s main coalition partner, the JVP is calling for blanket tax concessions for tsunami-affected businesses – when the government says no tax breaks.
In a statement to the Minister of Finance Sarath Amunugama, the JVP called for the removal of all taxes from tsunami-affected businesses.
“We request that steps be taken to release industrialists and traders (affected by the tsunami) from all taxes due to the government,” said the statement in Sinhala.
The JVP wants these businesses released from future taxes and also unpaid taxes before the tsunami.
“If we take steps to release them from all taxes including previous taxes, it will be a great encouragement to restart their businesses,” said the statement.
However at a press Conference on Monday the Treasury Secretary P B Jayasundara said that tax concessions are not an option that is being explored.
