Postal Department employees will go on over-time-strike from twelve midnight on Monday until over time dues for September are paid. Postal Department employees will go on over-time-strike from twelve midnight on Monday until over time dues for September are paid. “From midnight today we will not do the over time shifts until the pay us our over time arrears for September,” said General Secretary, Post and Telecommunications Officers Union, H K Kariyawasam.

The island wide strike will means 4,500 union members stopping over time work out of the 24,000 strong postal workforce.

However the local post is heavily dependent on over time worker for its day-to-day activities since it is short of cadre and stoppage of over time can slow down the snail mail system further.

At the moment, according to union sources, there are over 800 vacancies in the Department.

The Post Master General could not be contacted at the time of this article.
