PANAJI, October 27, 2011 (AFP) - A Dutch charter plane en route to Sri Lanka was forced to abort take-off after a bird flew into one of its engines in the Indian state of Goa, the airline said on Thursday.

"The plane hit the bird while it was gathering speed on the runway," ArkeFly spokeswoman Laura Water told AFP in The Hague.

"After the collision, the pilot braked and stopped the plane."

An airport spokesman had earlier told reporters that the bird strike forced the plane, a Boeing 767 with 263 passengers on board, to make an emergency landing soon after take-off at 7:30 am (0200 GMT).

"The bird was tucked inside the engine, which was damaged," the spokesman said, adding that no-one was injured and alternative arrangements were made to fly the passengers on to Sri Lanka.
