FTA with Pakistan in honour of President’s visit

Pakistan and Sri Lanka will meet next week to tie up a free trade agreement between the two countries by the time Sri Lanka’s President pays a visit to Pakistan next year. The Pakistani Premier, Shaukat Aziz, invited President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to visit Pakistan during his visit to Sri Lanka in November.

The President is due to visit Pakistan in the first quarter of 2005.

Next week trade teams from both countries will work at coming to some agreement so that the FTA between the two countries can be ceremonially activated during the State visit.

Both sides will try to agree on what items get duty reductions “so that the FTA can be announced by the time the President visits Pakistan.”
