With what is called the Geographic Information System (GIS) software, local authorities at the Kotte MC, can zoom in on any bit of information required on any site.

The Kotte Municipal Council is using the software to build a three-dimensional map of its city limits, packaging all the required information on any site, at the click of a mouse.

The information could help in several ways, from finding the best location for a new business, to gauging flood prone areas, soil studies or viewing disease spread patterns.

“At present, the information is either non-existent or scattered. And information is crucial for any planning or management,” said Dr. Fahmy Ismail, National Technical Advisor for the UNDP’s Urban Governance Support Project.
