Sri Lanka Telecom is Sri Lanka's only wireline operator. It also offers wireless CDMA fixed access and owns the cellular operator, Mobitel.
SLT, which is a third-owned by NTT, is currently in talks with Malaysia's UT group about a possible take-over of the NTT stake.
A Sri Lankan government committee is studying the deal. SLT is majority owned by the government, and has first refusal in case NTT decides to sell its stake.
Last year SLT's revenues from IP (Internet Protocol) based and data services grew by 645 million rupees, a 26 percent jump over 2005, SLT said, and broadband customers had reached 20,000.
The group has cash reserves of 15.3 billion and SLT says earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortization grew by 34 percent to 22.7 billion rupees.
SLT is 35.2 percent owned by Japan's NTT Communications Corporation, 49.5 percent by the Sri Lanka government. The rest is publicly held.
I think SLT must first expand the internet to everyone before moving on to advanced technologies.
Decides to play godmother and start censoring
This will be good and novel experience to sri lankan people which SLT suppose to offer IPTV.
SLT might think it prudent to expand the broadband customer base in the island too.
