Sri Lankan BPO to outsource long-line fishermen to Taiwan
Aug 28, 2006 (LBO) – A Sri Lankan business outsourcing firm has landed a job to train and place around 4,000 local youths in the Taiwan fishing industry.
Business Process Outsource (BPO) Services (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Sumathi Group Consolidated, will train Sri Lankan fisherman to speak the Taiwanese language of Hokien prior to their overseas placement.

Taiwanese fisheries industry adopts a long-line technique for commercial fishing, where tens of thousands of baited hooks hang from a single line.

Long-lines can be set to hang near the surface or on the sea bottom.

Sri Lankan fisherman, who will get a dollar salary, will be trained in the long-line fishing method by the Sumathi Group's Taiwanese client in Taiwan, Ranjan Madanayake, Director Marketing of BPO Services (Pvt) Ltd said Monday.

New to the business outsourcing market, BPO Services (Pvt) Ltd has an ongoing medical transcription project for doctors in the United States and a call centre.

Medical transcription is a process in which the transcribers listen to dictated recordings made by healthcare professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence and other administrative material.

Sri Lanka's 100 million dollar BPO business is driven by around 21 major companies employing over 2,500 people.
