Sri Lanka air cargo volumes hit life high in Dec 09
Jan 18, 2010 (LBO) - Cargo volumes at Sri Lanka's main international airport have hit a life high in December 2009, topping a previous record in 2006, the island's state-run national carrier which operates the terminal said.
Sri Lankan Airlines which operates the cargo terminal at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake said 23 airlines had carried 16,070 tonnes of cargo in 1,213 flights, topping a March 2006 high of 16,033 tonnes.

"We are pleased to witness the recent growth in cargo handling, and are hopeful that the trend will continue throughout 2010, as the world begins moving out of recession," Janaka Munasinghe, manager cargo operations at the airline said in a statement.

SriLankan said cargo volumes had fluctuated between 8,800 tonnes and 11,800 tonnes during the from August 2008 to last October. In November volumes had increased to 12,191 tonnes.

Sri Lankan itself had carried 8,163 tonnes, Dubai-based Emirates was second at 2,338 tonnes, and Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific had carried 986 tonnes.

Singapore Airlines (713 tonnes), Saudi Arabian (536 tonnes), Etihad (458 tonnes), Thai Airways (373 tonnes), Malaysia Airlines (357 tonnes), and Oman Air (335 tonnes) were among the others.

Exports were 11,651 tonnes of exports and imports 4,419 tonnes of imports. different shipments.

In November volumes had increased to 12,191 tonnes. The airport had handled 133,693 tonnes of cargo in 2009. The airline is expecting traffic to grow with the end of a 30-year conflict last year.

Colombo is positioning itself to be a transhipment hub for South Asian cargo.

The terminal is doubling its capacity to 300,000 tonnes per year, with the commissioning of a new export terminal in the first quarter of 2010.
