Dumping in wetlands and open fields has not only created a health hazard but is also destroying fragile ecosystems.
Environmentalists are now trying to rally the corporate sector and people to help the government deal with the mess.
A cattle herd reared in Wijerama, Nugegoda normally takes a routine tour around the area.
Villagers say their first stop is at a garbage dump in Nawinna, opposite the Arpico Showroom.
Although the waste dumps are a delicacy for the animals, it is becoming a health hazard for the people in the area.
“Children fall sick often in this area. Dengue, headaches and bowel diseases are common. Doctors say it is because of the garbage dumps,” complains Nayana Priyadarshini, Resident, Nawinna.
Residents say this was once a flourishing paddy field that sustained people in the neighborhood.
