The first online auction to sell four-digit international short codes for the telecom sector will get under way on May 22, the telecom watchdog said Wednesday.
The Information Communication Technology (ICT) firm, who will design and run the auction will be announced on Thursday, picked from proposals submitted in response to the regulators call, Prof. Rohan Samarajiva, of the Public Utilities Commission told journalists. rn
rnEighty-one short codes from the 18XY range will be offered to firms owning an External Gateway Operators (EGO) licence.rn
rnPolicy makers however, have not decided if all 81 codes will be offered in one go or would be auctioned in slots. rn
rnEGOs will have to register with the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) to obtain access facilities and possibly a software package that will provide the secure interface to bid over the Internet. rn
