World Health Organisation (WHO) tells Sri Lankan health authorities to participate in trade talks, for good health. “We have advocated that Sri Lanka strengthen legal expertise in the Ministry of Health, to influence future trade negotiations,” said the director of programme management of the WHO South East Asia region, Dr Bjorn Melgaard.

“This cell will negotiate with the Trade Ministry for necessary provisions to be included in trade agreements, to protect public health,” said Melgaard.

The idea is to make sure Sri Lanka’s majority poor, that depends on public health services, can get at medicinal drugs and vaccines at an affordable price – despite the increasing emphasis on intellectual property rights at trade talks.
