Cambodia PM sacks fishery officials
PHNOM PENH, July 5 (AsiaPulse) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has removed all the fishery administration chiefs in five provinces surrounding Tonle Sap lake, a Cambodian inland sea and the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, which is designated as a UNESCO biosphere.
Hun Sen ordered the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to remove fishery administration chiefs in Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Siem Reap and Kampong Thom in during a speech in Svay Rieng, an eastern province of Cambodia last week.

"For sustainablity in the great lake, I dont want to be a historical prisoner," Hun Sen said.

The dismissal occured as part of government efforts to reform the fisheries sector and increase fish populations, the primary source of protein for Cambodian people.

During the ceremony, Hun Sen also asked one of his deputy prime minister, and some ministries such as ministry of justice, inspection, environment, water resource, interior and Tonle Sap authority to increase monitoring of the fishing business in the Tonle Sap basin.

Hun Sen encouraged fishery experts, local authorities and people to take care and promote the fisheries sector for food security in the country.
