Aviation sports have long been restricted by security fears and cumbersome regulations, with ballooning being the only one to take off in certain areas excluding Colombo.
The new regulations will make licensing easier. Under existing regulations, any aviation sport, including ballooning follow detailed and elaborate checklists meant for airplanes.
“The new Civil Aviation Act will make provision for aviation sports and include specific regulations that are needed to licence these,” Secretary Ministry of Tourism, Dr. P. Ramunujam, said.
It could take local balloonists like Captain Anil Jayasinghe, well over a month to get a licence and permission on where, how far and how high to fly a balloon.
