Maithripala Sirisena to protect Mahinda Rajapaksa

Nov 28, 2014 (LBO) – Common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena said that he will not allow President Mahinda Rajapaksa or any of his family member to be tried overseas for allegations of war crimes. He was speaking at a press conference held in Colombo today.

Sirisena said that Sri Lanka has not sign any agreement with regard to the international war crime tribunal and therefore hauling anyone before the International Criminal Court (ICC) cannot be done.

I must say clearly that I will protect them all.

There were media reports saying that Tamil diaspora will take President Mahinda Rajapaksa to international criminal court for alleged war crimes, if in a situation he looses the presidential, former minister , Maithripala Sirisena said.

"I want to say very clearly that I will not allow the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora or anyone to take President Mahinda Rajapaksa, or any of his family members, or the security forces, who fought against the LTTE terrorism in this country and made sacrifices, to the international war crime tribunal.
