June 08, 2010 (LBO) - Three shipping lines have launched a new container shipping service through Sri Lanka's Colombo port to carry cargo to east Africa from the Indian sub-continent and the Far East, a statement said.





The SLPA said the vessel is expected to do over 1,000 moves per call at the JCT, Colombo's main container terminal.

It said Simatech's other services heavily contribute to making Colombo the hub port of South Asia connecting the Far East, South East Asia, Indian Sub-continent and Arabian Gulf cargoes.

"EAF service is the first service of Simatech into the African continent and this will be a stepping stone for further development of Simatech's presence in Africa," the statement said.

Middle East-based Simatech Shipping, together with Evergreen and Wanhai have launched a joint container service called East Africa (EAF) Service, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said.

"For this service, all three lines have deployed one vessel each with a carrying capacity of 1,200 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent container Units)."
