New Generation

Aug 15 (LBO) –Sri Lanka’s largest mobile operator, Dialog Telekom, said it has started South Asia’s first commercial third generation mobile service, after formally receiving the license on Tuesday.

Telecommunications is one of the fastest growth sectors in this South Asian island of 19.5 million people and the mobile connections per 100 people had risen to 19 last year from 13 reported a year ago.

Dialog Telekom, dominates the industry with over 2-million subscribers on its network. Other operators include Celltel Lanka Ltd, Hutchinson and Mobitel while the regulator has announced that a fifth license would be awarded.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) allowed the operator to test 3G services two years ago.

In 1989 Sri Lanka became the first South Asian nation to start mobile services, with Celltel Lanka starting operations.
