Sri Lanka southern chamber names top entrepreneurs
20 Oct, 2009 06:08:08
Oct 20, 2009 (LBO) - Nine entrepreneurs in southern Sri Lanka were recognised in a competition organised by the Hambantota district Chamber of Commerce to encourage businesses in the impoverished region.
The award winners ranged from an aquarium owner to a plant nursery operator and the owner of furniture outlet and a fashion centre, the chamber said in a statement.

The Best Entrepreneur Awards of the Hambantota District was designed to encourage the local business community to raise their standards of business practices and to achieve a high level of entrepreneurship, it said.

"The competition has now become benchmark and a driving factor for the local business community to look for more ethical approach towards their own businesses."

Hambantota is considered a 'lagging' region whose economy has been neglected for decades with high levels of poverty and unemployment.

But two big construction projects are underway - a deepwater port and an airport - that are expected to revive the regional economy.
