British airways to resume flights as UK holidaymakers to Lanka rise
16 Aug, 2012 23:56:36
Aug 16, 2012 (LBO) – British airways will resume flights to Sri Lanka in March 2013 after a fifteen year absence in the island, the airline said in a statement.
British airways will fly passengers from UK's Gatwick airport to Colombo's Bandaranaike international airport via Male in the Maldives.

The carrier will operate a Boeing 777, a long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliner with three cabins on a thrice-a-week flight schedule to Colombo, the airline said.

The airline has prices return flights start from 595 pounds in World Traveller, 1,316 pounds in World Traveller Plus and 2,244 pounds in Club World.

"This is such an exciting new route for us. The UK has the second largest number of tourists visiting the island after India so it’s a fantastic opportunity for them to fly there with British Airways from Gatwick, "Silla Maizey, British Airways managing director Gatwick, was quoted as saying in the statement.

"Sri Lanka has so much to offer visitors from beach, spa or adventure holidays, to cultural, wildlife and nature breaks," the statement said.

Visitors from Western Europe to the island rose 22 percent to 41,584 with UK generating most tourists at 13,643 up 13.7 percent from a year earlier.

In the first seven months of 2012, UK was the second largest source of tourists to Sri Lanka at 61,618 up 5 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.

British Airways suspended flights to Colombo in the late 1990s owing to the security situation at the time in Sri Lanka.
