Sri Lanka Institute of Directors calls for more awareness of company law

June 20, 2008 (LBO) – The new head of the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors, Marina Tharmaratnam, has said that it was important for directors to be more aware of the new company law because of its enhanced responsibilities.
She told the institute's annual general meeting that SLID organized a variety of courses aimed at the needs of the contemporary board room.

SLID had identified that it is important that all directors should be familiar with the new Companies Act, she was quoted as saying in a statement.

The new law has significantly increased fines and penalties and also has sections where the director can be held personally liable to creditors and banks, she added.

The following Council was elected for the year 2008 / 2009 at the AGM: President: Marina Tharmaratnam, Vice President: Mahen Dayananda, Vice President: Ronnie Pieiris, Immediate Past President: R L Juriansz.

Council Members: Shiromal Cooray, Chandima Gunawardena, Preethiraj Jayawardena, A R Rasiah, Pravir Samarasinghe, Suresh Shah, and Eshanth Wijesinghe.
