Sri Lanka launches crackdown on illegal Indian workers
09 Sep, 2007 15:19:10
Sept 9, 2007 (AFP) - Sri Lankan authorities have launched a crackdown on Indian nationals who arrive as tourists and stay on to work, an immigration official said Sunday.
Eight Indian men were arrested Friday in the south of the island, where they had been employed as farm workers, the official said, adding that all had entered as tourists.

"We are holding them at a detention centre and will be deporting them shortly," said the official, who declined to be named.

No figures were immediately available for the number of tourists who arrive from India, or who may be working illegally in the country.

Sri Lanka grants visas on arrival to most nationals as part of efforts to encourage tourism, a mainstay of the economy.

Shouldn't these people be allowed to work here?

Our people may not be finding it too attractive or boozing in the night and not coming to work the next day.
