Sri Lanka maternity hospital funded by Germany

Aug 18, 2012 (LBO) - Germany will provide a 38 million Euro credit (4.3 billion rupees) to re-build a maternity hospital in Mahamodara, in Southern Sri Lanka, which was damaged in a 2004 tsunami, the finance ministry said.
Rebuilding of the 600 bed hospital started with financing from the Helmut Kohl Maternity Hospital Foundation, but work stopped after funds ran out.

KfW, a German development finance unit is giving a 28 million Euro credit to complete the project. A grant of 3 million Euros will also be given by the Helmut Kohl Maternity Hospital Foundation for medical equipment.

The finance ministry says the state has a plan to cut maternal mortality from 31.1 per 100,000 live births now to 20 and child mortality from 10.9 per 1,000 live births to 4.5.

About 12,000 deliveries a year has taken place in Mahamodara hospital a year and services were given to 24,000 mothers.
