Sri Lanka mulls convention centre near airport: official

Mar 08, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka is exploring the possibility of building an international convention centre close to the main airport in Katunayake outside the capital Colombo, an official said.
Export development board (EDB) chairman, Janaka Ratnayake said the government may release land for the project.

Sri Lanka is holding Expo 2012, an export trade fair from March 28 to 31 at the Bandaranaike International Convention Centre in the capital after a gap of 15 years.

A 30-year war ended in Sri Lanka in May 2009 making it safer for international travellers.

He said a convention centre near the airport will Sri Lanka to host more international trade fairs.

Logical location is Negombo. Didn't the Tourist Authority designate Negombo as the MICE location? Meet Sri Lanka or some such tag was proposed? EDB should talk to SLTA, or at least read their master plan.

This is a positive trend. Hope this convention centre will be iconic and in par with world's best. Best would be too fast track development as such as this and bring in a private and public partnership.
