Sri Lanka sets up school of business management

Mar 23, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka is to set up a school of business management with degree awarding status under the state-run National Institute of Business Management.
The Cabinet of ministers this week approved the proposal made by Dullas Alahappperuma, Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development, a statement said.

"The Cabinet gave its approval to proceed with the establishment of National School of Business Management with degree awarding status," it said.

"The National School of Business Management has been incorporated to conduct Degree Courses under the supervision of the National Institute of Business Management."

The school will be set up on a 25-acre land at Homagama, Pitipana, south of the capital Colombo.

I am not too sure this is the right thing to do. We already have universities which are struggling to survive and also maintain quality. I feel its good to invest in existing universities and if there are any segments not covered within the existing system, try and extend the courses to these segments without opening new institutions, which will only dilute degress offered by local institutes further. Its sad to see that we have allowed sub standrad foriegn degrees to dominate.
