Revenue was almost flat, growing by just one percent to 7.4 billion rupees in the period while earnings per share were 0.72 rupees compared with 0.53 the year before.
Cargills (Ceylon) is part of the Ceylon Theatres group which has operations in retailing, manufacturing and restaurants and agri-business.
The firm said in a statement that it intends to invest in the north with the end of the 30-year ethnic war after government forces defeated Tamil Tiger rebels in May.
Cargills (Ceylon) chief executive Ranjit Page said that in the medium to long term its Cargills Food City supermarket chain would be increasing its presence in regional townships across all 25 districts of the island.
"We are keen to repeat our success in the east in the northern region as well," he said.
"The group has already planned out investments in the peninsula in terms of retailing, processing and sourcing of fresh produce."
The statement said the firm's investments in the east, which was cleared of rebels a year ago, had yielded results. It attributed the June quarter growth to "consistent investment" and "strategic cost reduction and revenue enhancement measures adopted in the early part of 2009 as well as continued focus on business fundamentals."
The company claimed it now accounts for more than half of the country’s supermarket market share and has enjoyed significant growth in the FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) sector.
The Cargills Food City supermarket chain has "recorded an impressive growth", the statement said.
"This performance is especially noteworthy considering the reduced commodity prices and the sector continuing to maintain its low-price strategy which was pioneered by Cargills Food City."
The Cargills FMCG sector performed "exceptionally well" in the quarter ended June 2009, the statement also said.
"Excellent turnover growth rates have been recorded by all manufacturing brands Cargills Magic, Cargills Kist and Cargills Supremo as well as by the distribution operation Millers and the KFC chain of restaurants."
Cargills said it sees great potential in the FMCG sector and would be looking to expand its presence in the sector.
"Cargills Magic, Cargills Kist and Cargills Supremo have significantly enhanced their category presence and would be building their brand positions with an international outlook," it said.
The company recently restructured its management to focus on its expansion drive in the FMCG sector, Page said.
