23 Nov, 2012 08:10:57
Nov 23, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka is expecting closer economic ties with Kazakhstan following a visit to the country by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the state information office said.
The information office quoted President Rajapaksa as saying that the two countries will commence negotiations on economic and technical co-operation, avoiding double taxation, investment protection and air services.

Already charter flights with Luk Aero Air have started between Colombo and the former Kazakh capital of Almaty.

A bilateral agreement on tourism co-operation had been signed by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kazakhstan.

Sri Lanka had congratulated Kazakhstan on being elected to the UN Human Rights Council.

About 100 businessmen from Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka had participated in a business where foreign minister G L Pieris had invited the country to participate in oil exploration in Sri Lanka.
