Sri Lanka's Mannar district aquaculture boosted by Japan

Mar 07, 2013 (LBO) - Japan will provide 8.2 million rupees to build a hatchery to produce fingerlings in Sri Lanka's former war torn North Eastern district of Mannar, the Japanese embassy said.
Japan will give 65,735 dollars as grant aid to Sri Lanka's state-run National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA) to build a hatchery that will produce, 2 million fingerlings a year.

The Japanese embassy said the project will increase food security and income generation at Sirikkulama village in Mannar, where people were recently re-settled.

The fish will be stocked in Giant Tank and other reservoirs in the Mannar district.

While 108 fishery society members would benefit directly from the project, nearly 70,000 fishermen in Mannar District would benefit indirectly, the Japanese embassy said.
