August 1, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's Union Assurance made it easier to claim motor accident insurance in the highly competitive industry by allowing policy holders to drive off without waiting for assessors to arrive for inspections. A few years ago another insurer transformed the industry by doing away with the requirement for a police report, giving claims in cash on the spot.

The innovations started after private insurers were licensed and price controls on motor insurance premiums were lifted buy the regulator.

The new 'Call & Go' vehicle policy allows customers to drive off after an accident after phoning a 24 call centre and getting a reference number, Union Assurance said.

They can drive into one of the garages Union Assurance has tied up with across the island to get their vehicle repaired.

Around 35 garages and spare parts suppliers are registered with the firm.

Or an assessor will visit the customers at a time and place convenient to them to assess the damage if policy holders want to get their vehicles repaired at a garage of their choice.

Union Assurance Limited Wednesday also put a life policy offering an annual dividend.
