The extension is expected to help continuing investigations into former foreign minister’s murder and crackdown on the spree of recent criminal activities.

The current state of emergency was imposed on August 12, 205, following the assassination of former Foreign Minister Lakshaman Kadiragama by a sniper at his residence in Colombo.

Government officials justified the earlier extension to the killers who were still at large.

The government also feared there might be more such attacks despite a ceasefire with rebel tigers fighting for separate Northern state

Meanwhile, cochairs of the Tokyo donor conference are due to meet on 19 September to asses progress with the peace process and the ceasefire agreement between the government and the LTTE.
