Nov 19, 2018 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri on Monday informed the Parliament that the party leaders have agreed to appoint the Committee of Selection and asked political parties to nominate their members.
The decision has been taken at the party leaders meeting held today morning under the chairmanship of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
Even though Dinesh Gunawardena proposed to allocate the majority in the Committee for their side, Anura Kumara rejected the proposal saying the UPFA do not have the majority in Parliament.
Anura Kumara requested the Deputy Speaker to consider the number of seats each political party represents when appointing members to the Committee of Selection.
As per the standing orders, the Committee of Selection should be appointed at the commencement of every Parliamentary session which will nominate members to serve upon other Committees including the Committee on Parliamentary Business, Committee on Standing Orders, House Committee and Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
Meanwhile, Lakshman Kiriella proposed to conduct an investigation into the incidents took place last week in the country’s supreme legislature that led to indecent clashes.
The Parliament sitting which lasted only a few minutes in a peaceful manner adjourned till 23rd November 2018.
