Sri Lanka Telecom’s mobile subsidiary on Monday said it was repackaging its IDD rates to better cater to its customer base. A Mobitel statement on Monday said customer could choose between a high clarity premium service or a low cost reasonable clarity option.

While the premium service utilises traditional norms to connect to international destinations, IDD BUDDY is designed using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology.

The process essentially works by transferring voice calls into data and then transmitting them over the IP networks to a recipient’s point of presence, which in turn transfers the data back to voice and forwards the calls to their final destination called party.

The use of this method of calling allows users to connect economically to 30 countries initially, the statement said.

Mobitel is a fully owned subsidiary of fixed line giant Sri Lanka Telecom.

The cellular operator has so far invested US$ 140 million to migrate to a GSM platform and is the third large
