June 22, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will head a special committee to oversee implementation of United Nations Human Rights Council recommendations agreed on in 2015.
“Cabinet approved to appoint a committee of ministers chaired by the Prime Minister Wickremesinghe together with officials to assist the main committee in this regard,” the most recent statement on approved cabinet decisions said.
The proposal was put forward by the Premier but details of the commission have not been released yet.
Sri Lanka has gained two more years to implement above recommendations agreed in 2015, at the UNHCR session held in March 2017.
Wickremesinghe in Parliament recently stated that a Truth and Reconciliation Commission like that of South Africa will be established in Sri Lanka.
