Mar 29, 2012 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s is studying the building of a new railway track to the east of the country and also extend another rail track to Hambantota in the South, minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said. He said the cabinet of ministers had asked the Central Engineering Consulting Bureau, a state agency to conduct a pre-feasiblity study to build a rail track from Embilipitiya to Batticaloa in the East via Moneragala and Ampara.

Another feasibility is being conducted by Sri Lanka’s Moratuwa University on extending an existing track to from Colombo to Avissawella to Hambantota via Ratnapura, Embilipitiya and Mattala, Abeywardene said.

A new international airport is being built in Mattala and Hambantota has a new seaport.
