The government says it will make legal changes to give more teeth to the Auditor General. The government this week, approved a proposal to restructure the Auditor General’s Department, giving it greater administrative and financial independence.
A government official on Thursday, said the Act governing the State auditing body would be changed, to bring it under the purview of Parliament.
Currently the department is dependant on the Finance Ministry for its budgets and the Public Services Department for staff administration.
The proposed restructuring will also create a National Audit Commission as a decision making body overseeing the Auditor General’s Department.
The official said a new audit bill will be drafted at the earliest, to facilitate the changes.
