Japan on Friday gave close to US$ 10 million to Sri Lanka to construct a bridge across the Mahaweli River – a link on the A-11 road, which is a key access route to the east coast. The Finance Ministry in a statement on Friday said the grant will pay for a highway bridge at Manampitiya near historic Polonnaruwa, replacing the current rail cum road bridge build back in 1922.

The current structure is a bottleneck on the A11 road, with road traffic and rail traffic taking turns across the bridge.

The Road Development Authority project to construct the 10.4 meter wide, 302 meters long bridge will also help the estimated 904,000 families living around the Mahaweli.

The bridge is scheduled for use by 2008, with detailed designed expected to be completed in May.
