Oct 03, 2012 (LBO) – John Keells Plc, a commodity broking firm said Mekala Wanigasuriya, one its employees became the first female to auction rubber, since Colombo auctions began 112 years ago. The firm said the first ever lady tea auctioneer was also from John Keells.
“For the first time in 112 years, a lady took to the rostrum and sold a catalogue at the rubber auction held on 25th September 2012,” John Keells, a unit of listed John Keells Holdings said in a statement.
Rubber auctions had begun on November 04, 1910, but only males had been in the business.
Wanigasuriya had sold RSS 1 grade rubber from Pallipitiya Estate of Welgama Investments (Pvt) Ltd to Almar Trading Co (Pvt) Ltd.
