Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) members converged in Colombo earlier this week for their annual forum and commission meeting.

A point stressed throughout the forum was the need for communication infrastructure to reach rural areas, especially in developing countries.

A number of pilot projects deployed in rural communities have proved this point, delivering anything from basic telephony services to healthcare and disaster management.

While this is also true for Sri Lanka, industry officials say slow and irregular policy making is holding up projects along with a lack of funding to rollout expensive infrastructure in rural areas.
