Feb 09, 2016 (LBO) – Leader of the Democratic Party, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka was sworn in as a Member of Parliament before Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, a short while ago.
Working Committee of the United National Party yesterday unanimously approved to appoint Sarath Fonseka for the parliamentary seat left vacant by the death of Minister M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena.
Relevant gazette notification has been published yesterday and there are also reports of providing him with a ministerial portfolio.
The United National Party recently signed a collective agreement with the Democratic Party to work in collaboration.
The MoU was signed by Fonseka as the leader of the Democratic Party and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the UNP leader.
The two leaders exchanged agreements for the Democratic Party to join the United National Front, the coalition led by the UNP.
Fonseka contested the 2015 General Election under Democratic National Alliance from Colombo district, however he was not elected neither was his party able to secure a seat during the election.
