Second Hearing

Aug 26, 2008 (LBO) - A case against a Sri Lankan teenager who was condemned to death in Saudi Arabia, will be heard again after an appeal to a higher court, the island's foreign ministry said.

Embassy officials had visited Rizana on August 17 and found her in good health.

Rizana was only 17 years at the time of the alleged offence. Rizana Nafeek was condemned to death after an infant in her care died while being bottle fed in the town on Dawadmi, 220 kilometres away from the Saudi capital of Riyadh.

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Riyadh had arranged the law firm of Kateb Fahad Al – Shammary to represent Rizana, with the financial support of the Hong Kong based Asian Human Rights Commission and other well wishers.

The lawyer had appealed to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) in Riyadh who had upheld the objection, Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The case is expected to be heard in Dawadmi high court again on August 30, the statement said.
