Sri Lanka allows Chinese Port City breakwater construction

Mar 20, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s new rulers allowed the Chinese construction company to build the break water of the Chinese’s funded port city project which had been suspended by the government earlier March.







The 1.4 billion US dollar Chinese Port City is to be constructed between the Southern edge of the new Colombo South Port and the Fort Lighthouse.





The total area of sea to be reclaimed is 252 hectares.





The 3.25 km long breakwater, an offshore barrier which protects the city from the full impact of waves.





Cabinet Spokesperson minister Rajitha Senaratne said that the decision was taken, following a request made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Senarathne said the decision was made in order to prevent damage from heavy rains and sea erosion to the project.
