Sri Lanka appoints honorary consul for Cape Town

Dec 18, 2012 (LBO) - Jonathan Jacobs, a businessman and chairman of International Trade and Tourism of the Cape Town Chamber of Commerce, has been appointed Honorary Consul covering the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said he will assist the Sri Lankan High Commission in Pretoria.

The foreign ministry said Cape Town is 1,460 kilometres away from the capital Pretoria and it attracts 1.2 million tourists a year. It was also considered South Africa's most picturesque city.

"There are also plans to obtain the expertise of the city to assist Colombo’s waterfront development and urban layout," the foreign ministry said.

Cape Town is the headquarters of the African National Congress Progressive Business Forum (ANC PBF) which had sent a 30 company delegation to Sri Lanka in September.

A Sri Lankan firm is providing port management services to South Africa and several delegations including a software firms in October, a group from Sri Lanka's Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and a parliamentary delegation had visited in November.
