Bandaranaike-Airport

Aug 23, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved awarding the second contract for the operation of duty free shops at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to Dufry AG of Switzerland.

The proposal made by the Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva was approved for the operation of duty free concession shops in No 1 passenger terminal at the airport for next 05 years.

Dufry AG is a Swiss-based travel retailer operating around 2,200 duty-free and duty-paid shops in airports, cruise lines, seaports, railway stations and central tourist areas.

It employs almost 29,000 people and the company, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, operates in over 60 countries worldwide.

In March this year, Transport Ministry said it concluded the initial core category duty free tender of the airport for the first time since inception.

The ministry added the tender was awarded to Flemingo Duty Free at 40 percent revenue share.

The airport handled 9.47 million international passengers last year with passenger traffic growing by 14 percent, while the new airport terminal is due to be operational by 2020.
