Sri Lanka Thursday announced a ban on tinted glasses on vehicles and urged motorists to carry identity papers with them as the authorities moved to crack down on organised crime. The Public Security ministry said the tinted glass ban will go into effect from December 1, but stepped up checks on all vehicles has been ordered with immediate effect.

“Police and security forces have been alerted to keep a close watch on all vehicles and carry out checks as a measure to prevent crime, vehicle thefts and other violations of law,” the ministry said in a statement.

The move came after government spokesman Mangala Samaraweera said crime had reached “epidemic proportions” in the country because of inadequacies of governance in the past 25 years. (AFP)
