Dec 20, 2012 (LBO) – Flooding and landslide from days of heavy rain in Sri Lanka’s central, eastern and southern areas have left 25 dead, 13 missing and more than 18,000 homeless, the state disaster management agency said. High winds and flood had left 8,237 homeless in Baticaloa in the East of the island and another 8,255 in Amparai also in the East, who were housed in evacuation shelters.
Many others were staying with relatives and friends.
The disaster management centre said about 266,000 people have so far been affected by floods and landslides from torrential rains that lashed the island’s central, north central and eastern and southeastern areas.
Many tanks (man-made irrigation reservoirs) are overflowing, after two years of drought with consecutive monsoon rain failures.
