Sri Lanka plans export trade fair for 2014 August

July 12, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka is planning an export fair to showcase its products and services to the world in August 2014, and has appointed a high level panel to take it forward, the ministry of industry and commerce said.

The fair will target buyers outside traditional market in EU and North America.

It is now time that we enhance our on-going market and product diversification even further, 54 percent of our exports are still concentrated on European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Free Trade Association (NAFTA) markets Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of Industry and Commerce said in a statement.

Sixty six of the world market and population growth in the next century is expected to come from Africa. The rapid growth in China’s household consumption and their growing use of raw material has enabled it to become a major destination for our exports.

The 'Expo 2014' has been scheduled for August 2014. In 2012 the Expo was held after the absence of more than 10 years.

It comes as a downturn in exports in 2012. Sri Lanka's exports fell 2.8 percent to 837 million US dollars in March 2013 from a year earlier, data released by the Central Bank showed.
